Portrait

Enit K. Steiner holds a PhD in English Literature and a Lizentiat in French and English Literature and Linguistics from the University of Zurich. She was 2006-2008 a visiting fellow at the English Department of the University of California, Los Angeles, until she joined the English Department at the University of Zurich as a subsidy recipient of the Swiss National Science Foundation. She is the author of Jane Austen's Civilized Women: Morality, Gender and the Civilizing Process and editor of Frances Brooke's The History of Lady Julia Mandeville (www.pickeringchatto.com/mandeville).

Her fields of interest include the novel and its relationship with the philosophical thought of the Enlightenment, women's writing of the18th and 19th century, theory of criticism and the French-English literary exchange. She takes particular interest in the legacy of the Scottish Enlightenment, the modifications it underwent in the works of what we retrospectively call the Romantic era and how it continues to be discussed, refigured and applied in contemporary theories of human society.

Enit is working on a project that examines the extent to which cosmopolitan thought is part of utopian imagination. The project includes works ranging from early traditional utopian fiction to recent (feminist) science fiction whose utopian character is debatable. Its provisional title is "Sharing Wor(l)ds: Cosmopolitanism and Utopian Vision."
