Martin Heusser is a professor at the English Department of Zurich University where he holds the chair for Literatures in English of the 19th and 20 Centuries. He wrote a book on Robert Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy and one on the poetry of E. E. Cummings which includes an extensive discussion of his typography.

His primary research interests lie in word & image studies, American studies and literary theory. Martin Heusser has edited several volumes of essays on word & image topics, among them The Pictured Word (1998), Text and Visuality (1999) and On Verbal / Visual Representation (2005).

At present he is working on a series of articles on issues of national identity in American art and literature. Since 2008, he has been a member of the editorial board of Schweizer Anglistische Arbeiten / Swiss Studies in English (Gunter Narr), a series that publishes outstanding Swiss monographs on English literature and linguistics.
