The English Department of the University of Zurich is the largest in Switzerland and one of the larger departments in the German-speaking part of Europe. We offer a broad range of courses in both English literature and linguistics, with an unusually broad coverage for historical studies in both fields (including mediaeval literature and language history from the middle ages to the present day). We will, moreover, soon be in a position to cover the global spread of English in both subdisciplines (including Global literatures).
The department has eight professorships (four in each field) and an additional assistant professorship for Global literatures. With a total staff of over 50 we offer Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes and are committed to high standards in research and teaching, among others evidenced by the fact that our students are regularly awarded the faculty’s semester prizes for best papers.
We cooperate with other departments in our faculty (e.g. in the cross-disciplinary course programmes in linguistics and literature) and with other Swiss universities, and we have a strong commitment to international collaboration. Our course programmes are carefully designed to guide students through their studies in an efficient way. We offer a range of courses for general interest and further specialisation.
In the hope of being able to welcome you to the English department as a Bachelor, Master or doctoral student,
Head of the English Department
