Portrait

Nicole Frey Büchel has been a member of the English Department since March 2000. She holds the position of an Academic Associate and acts as coordinator for matters concerning the teaching of English Literature at the Zurich University of Teacher Education (PHZH).

Her main research areas include narrative Identity, literature of the 19th and 20th century, coming-of-age, and performance studies. While her Lizentiatsarbeit resulted from her stay abroad in Edinburgh and dealt with the mythical novels of the Orkney writer George Mackay Brown, her doctoral thesis Perpetual Performance – Selfhood and Representation in Byron’s Writing (2007) explores the Byronic self through a prism of modern literary theory. It aims to cast light on the different ways selfhood is constructed in literature as well as on the various conceptions of the self which lie beneath the surface of Byron’s texts.

Nicole Frey Büchel has taught a range of courses on fiction, narratology, poetry and Shakespeare at the English Department. Presently she teaches a range of courses on English literature for students of the Zurich University of Teacher Education. From 2000-2006 she was on the editorial board of Variations, the Literary Journal at the University of Zurich.

Nicole Frey Büchel is married and mother of two children. In her spare time she loves spending time with her family and friends, dancing ballet and spending time outdoors.
