The PhD project, which is supervised by Prof. Dr. Barbara Straumann, analyses the discursive co-construction of sex and ‘race' in their function as technologies of power in Victorian and Neo-Victorian texts. The focus lies on characters of European and African descent within a British and West Indian/Caribbean context. The theoretical basis for this work is Michel Foucault’s The History of Sexuality Volume 1: The Will to Knowledge. It is a continuation of the MA thesis entitled "'Race' and Sex - A Foucauldian Approach to Reading (Neo-) Victorian Narratives".
