Editorial Note

  • It is not in fact clear whether or not this limerick was written by an Irish author. However, given that this poetic genre is popularly believed to have been named after the Irish town Limerick, we have decided to include it here.
  • So far, the earliest edition found is The Complete Limerick Book: The Origin, History, and Achievements of the Limerick, with Over 400 Selected Examples, by Langford Reed (1925, p. 48).
