Bachelor Major in English (120 ECTS): Program Requirements

We have also provided some sample timetables, to illustrate some of the various ways in which you can organize your studies.

Modules Intended for Beginners

The three modules from the module group "Introduction to English Literature and Linguistics" should be taken at the very beginning of one's studies.

In addition, some modules listed under "Electives I" and "Electives II" may also be suitable. (Details are indicated below.)

Introduction to English Literature and Linguistics (30 ECTS)

Language Skills and Culture: Introduction

12 ECTS

Note: Students who fail any of these three modules twice can no longer complete the study program.

 

Modules Intended for Advanced Students

Most of the modules listed below are intended for advanced students (i.e. students who have completed all the modules from the module group "Introduction to English Literature and Linguistics").

English Linguistics (24 ECTS)

Important: Students should have completed "Language Skills and Culture: Introduction" as well as "Introduction to English Linguistics" before taking any of the modules listed below.

History of the English Language 1: Focus on Old English

6 ECTS

History of the English Language 2: Focus on Middle English

6 ECTS

Two of the following five Bachelor Seminars (2 x 6 ECTS):

12 ECTS

Note: 

  • Students who fail either "History of the English Language 1: Focus on Old English" or "History of the English Language 2: Focus on Middle English" twice can no longer complete the study program.
  • Students who fail four of the five Bachelor Seminars in Linguistics twice (i.e. 4 x 2 fails, 8 overall) can no longer complete the study program. The may, however, still be able to complete the Bachelor minor (60 ECTS).

English Literature (24 ECTS)

Important: Students should have completed "Language Skills and Culture: Introduction" as well as "English Literature: Textual Analysis" before taking any of the modules listed below. 

Literature in Context: History and Theory

6 ECTS

Three of the following ten Bachelor Seminars (3 x 6 ECTS):

18 ECTS

Note:

  • Students who fail "Literature in Context: History and Theory" twice can no longer complete the study program.
  • Students who fail seven of the ten Bachelor Seminars in Literature twice (i.e. 7 x 2 fails, 14 overall) can no longer complete the study program. The may, however, still be able to complete the Bachelor minor (60 ECTS).

Language Skills and Culture (12 ECTS)

Important: Students should have completed "Language Skills and Culture: Introduction" before taking any of the modules listed below. 

Writing Skills and Media Analysis

6 ECTS

One of the following modules:

6 ECTS

Note:

  • Students who fail "Writing Skills and Media Analysis" twice can no longer complete the study program.
  • Students who fail both "Writing Skills and Media Analysis: Focus" and "Writing Skills and Media Analysis: Explorations" twice (i.e. four fails overall) can no longer complete the study program. The may, however, still be able to complete the Bachelor minor (60 ECTS).

Electives I (3 ECTS)

one module from one of the following three module groups:

  • English Literature
  • English Linguistics
  • Language Skills and Culture
 3 ECTS

Electives II (12 ECTS)

free choice of modules from any of the following module groups:
  • English Literature
  • English Linguistics
  • Language Skills and Culture
  • Other Curricular Modules
  • Transferable Skills
12 ECTS

Bachelor Thesis (15 ECTS)

The Bachelor Thesis can be written in either English Linguistics or English Literature.

 

Note: Students may also take additional modules, beyond the required modules outlined above.
