Master Minor in English (30 ECTS): Program Requirements

The requirements for the Master Major in English Literature and/or Linguistics (30 ECTS) are outlined in the corresponding section of the Studienordnung.

Important: In addition to meeting the requirements outlined in the Studienordnung, you must also make sure that at least 50% of the modules in your study program are graded modules.

There are different ways in which one can fulfill these requirements. The following are the minimum requirements.

We recommend that you follow one of three tracks:

  • English Literature and Linguistics
  • English Literature only
  • English Linguistics only

Note: For students wishing to do the Lehrdiplom, we recommend the "English Literature and Linguistics" track.

Modules Intended for the Beginning of One's Studies

The modules in the following two categories should be taken early on, ideally in the first or second semester of one's Master studies in English Literature and/or Linguistics.

Methods and Theories (6 ECTS)

Methods and Theories in English Linguistics


Reading Literary and Critical Theory



  • Students may also take both these modules (i.e. 12 ECTS). In that case, 6 of the 12 ECTS would count toward the elective component of the program.
  • Each of these modules can only be repeated once. Students who have failed both of these modules twice can no longer complete the study program.

Language Skills and Culture (6 ECTS)


Modules Intended for More Advanced Master Students

While students may take some of the modules below early on in their Master studies, we strongly recommend that the modules listed above, under "Modules Intended for the Beginning of One's Studies," be prioritized.

Research-Oriented Specialization (9 ECTS)

One Research Seminar from the module groups "Research-Oriented Specialization in Linguistics" or "Research-Oriented Specialization in Literature":


Note: Students may also take a module belonging to the category "Projects in English Linguistics" (15 ECTS) to cover this requirement. The extra 6 ECTS will be counted toward the elective component.

Electives (9 ECTS)

free choice of modules from any of the following module groups:

  • Research-Oriented Specialization: English Linguistics
  • Research-Oriented Specialization: English Literature
  • English Linguistics
  • English Literature
  • Language Skills and Culture



Note: Students may also take additional modules, beyond the required modules outlined above.
