Culture—and therefore cultural studies—is becoming ever more visual and multimedial. English literature as an academic subject is no longer limited to written texts, but includes the analysis of paintings, photographs, films, and TV series. This project aims (a) to teach the students of the English Department the analytical and technical knowledge they need for academic engagement with multimedial material, (b) to foster its use in academic formats such as essays and theses, and (c) to establish an interactive, sustainable archive of multimedial texts.
We offer two pilot seminars in the autumn semester 2017:
By giving students the opportunity to contribute material to the seminars, we incorporate the concept of the flipped classroom into our project. We aim to extend the existing academic formats by allowing students to hand in visual essays or to embed multimedial material such as film clips in their written essays. This allows students to reflect on the possibilities and limits of visual thinking and expression.
The seminars are accompanied by a tutorial (Mondays, 2-4pm) that teaches the students the technical skills of film editing.
