Current Research Interests

Professor Martin Heusser researches questions of Modernism and Postmodernism in 19th and 20th century literature, placing a focus on the themes of space and visuality (landscapes and painting). He also investigates phenomena such as representation, political identity and reality. Other research interests include the role of Mexico in the imagination of American intellectuals, the Vietnam War and the representation of Americanness. He is currently working on an analysis of the perception of the Vietnam War in photojournalism (e.g. LIFE magazine) and the popular media, particularly graphic storytelling and visual narrative. In addition, with his assistants, Martin Heusser organizes the annual Shakespeare Week (which he founded in the year 2000).
