We have the pleasure to cordially invite you to an event with the Burmese American author Wendy Law-Yone, who will read from and discuss her work in PD Dr. Christiane Schlote's seminar ‘Postcolonial Dictatorships’.
Born in Mandalay, Burma, Wendy Law-Yone grew up in Rangoon, but she fled to the US at the age of twenty, after her father, Edward Law-Yone, founder and chief editor of Burma’s influential newspaper The Nation, was imprisoned by Burma’s dictatorial General Ne Win. Wendy Law-Yone is the author of A Daughter’s Memoir of Burma (2014), Golden Parasol (2013), The Road to Wanting (2010), Irrawaddy Tango (1994) and The Coffin Tree (1983) and her short stories have appeared in Grand Street and literary anthologies. Irrawaddy Tango was nominated for the 1994 Irish Times International Fiction Prize. The Road to Wanting was longlisted for the 2011 Orange Prize. Awards for her writing include a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Award for Creative Writing, a Harvard Foundation Award for International Literary Arts and Intercultural Relations and a David T. K. Wong Creative Writing Fellowship from the University of East Anglia. Wendy Law-Yone relocated to the UK in 2002 and lives in London.
