A Conversation with Ken Liu

As part of Barbara Straumann's M.A. Seminar "We 'Other Victorians': The Literature and Culture of Neo-Victorianism," we will host a conversation with Ken Liu, author of the short story "Good Hunting." The meeting will take place on Zoom on January 11, 2022 at 4:00 pm.

“Good Hunting” is fantasy fairytale turned neo-Victorian steampunk. The story follows Liang as he grows from a boy demon hunting with his father to a man living in less-than-magical colonial Hong Kong and Yan, a shape-shifting fox spirit, as she loses her magic in a world of steam power but, with the help of Liang, reclaims her own power in the face of misogyny and colonialism.

Ken Liu is an American author of speculative fiction. A winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy awards, he wrote the Dandelion Dynasty, a silkpunk epic fantasy series (starting with The Grace of Kings), as well as short story collections The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories and The Hidden Girl and Other Stories. He also authored the Star Wars novel The Legends of Luke Skywalker.

This discussion may be of interest to anyone interested in neo-Victorian literature, fantasy, science fiction, or postcolonialism.
