Abstract

British colonial rule was, arguably, a structure of oppression that affected Ireland as a whole -- yet oppression was also meted out unevenly. In other words, even under colonial rule, some of the island’s inhabitants would have been more fully and consistently marginalized than others.

In this lecture series, we will examine different types of oppression, from the early modern period through the twentieth century and into the present. Topics will include the religiously motivated mistreatment of women (e.g. witches and witchcraft trials), the history and culture of Irish travelers, and the representation of ‘minority groups’ in literature, comics, and film (e.g. LGBTQI+ or ‘non-white’ individuals). Throughout, the aim will be not merely to bear witness to injustice, but also to highlight the multiple ways in which victims of oppression asserted their dignity by striving to evade, resist, and even overthrow social structures of domination.
