Editorial Note

Switzerland features only peripherally - if at all - in this poem, through a reference to Hannibal's troups crossing the Alps ("across the Alps of each other the elphants / Trooped").

In fact, Hannibal very likely crossed the French and Italian Alps, but not the Swiss Alps. However, we thought it best to be generous here ...
