Master: Why Study English at UZH?

The UZH: A Top University

The University of Zurich is one of world's leading universities, and it regularly features in the top 100 of global university rankings.

In addition, the University of Zurich is Switzerland's largest university, which means that no other Swiss university can offer a comparably wide range of study programs and courses. Find out more about the university on the UZH Profile site.

Zurich, finally, is Switzerland's economic center. The city boasts a high standard of living and a very vibrant cultural scene. More information is available on the city of Zurich's official website.

World-Class Research

The professors working at the English Department are highly respected scholars within their respective fields of research – and students will routinely engage with professors' current research in their Master-level classes. All professors have strong publication records, and they participate in a wide range of collaborative research projects (including international collaborations).

Links to individual researchers' homepages are available on the UZH English Department's Staff List. More information on larger research projects is available in the Research section.

In addition, the UZH English Department regularly invites scholars from other universities – Swiss or international – to give guest lectures or conduct workshops. Master students will thus encounter a range of different perspectives on the study and research areas of their choice.

What Makes the UZH English Department Special?

The UZH English Department is beautifully situated in a historic nineteenth-century villa (PLH: Plattenstrasse 47) and another building (PET, Pestalozzistrasse 50) just across a lovely, quiet courtyard which is only c. 5-10 minutes walking distance from the UZH main building (KOL; see www.plaene.uzh.ch).

With four chairs (i.e. professors) in English Literature and four chairs in English Linguistics (incl. Switzerland's only full professorship in English Historical Linguistics), the UZH English Department offers the broadest range of courses of any Swiss university. Some other assets include:

Student Groups

In addition, the Fachverein Anglistik FAVA and the English Department's drama group, the Blueprint Masquerades, are just two examples of the active student life that characterizes our department (see Student Groups).
