Roger Casement: Material for Teachers

As part of a Master-level course, eight UZH students designed teaching units on the life and afterlife of Roger Casement, for advanced ESL classrooms (c. age 16-18).

Who Was Roger Casement?

  • a British Foreign Office diplomat and proto-humanitarian activist who became famous for exposing extremely exploitative labor conditions in rubber production in the Belgian Congo and, later, in the Putumayo region in the Amazon;
  • an Irish nationalist executed for high treason during World War I;
  • a man who very likely perferred to have sex with men, as documented in the controversial 'Black Diaries';
  • an important figure in Irish cultural history.

More information is available in the video included below, on a forthcoming graphic novel about Roger Casement (art & script by Neil O'Driscoll, story by Neil O'Driscoll and Martin Mühlheim).

Forthcoming: Graphic Novel on Roger Casement

The video below introduces a forthcoming graphic novel about Roger Casement (art & script by Neil O'Driscoll, story by Neil O'Driscoll and Martin Mühlheim).

General Concept for the Teaching Units

Each of the teaching units listed below comprises:

  • a Teacher's Guide that outlines the aims and structure of the teaching unit;
  • five different student tasks (incl. handouts and other materials).

The teaching units are constructed in a modular fashion, i.e. teachers may choose to teach one or more complete units, or they may select only some tasks from some of the teaching units. (Further details are available in the Teacher's Guide for each unit.)

Credits & Sponsors

In the course of the project, the students received advice and feedback from Kyle Greenwood, Martin Mühlheim, Neil O'Driscoll, and Ana Sobral.

The project was sponsored by UZH Alumni, the series "La Suisse existe/n'existe pas" (initiated by SAGW), and the Embassy of Ireland, Switzerland.
