Prerequisites Students are required to have passed an introductory module in linguistics at Bachelor-level. The level of English language skills required for this course should correspond to the level taught in the Language Skills and Culture introductory module.
Content Seminars in this module will focus on the use of English in context. They will address how the form and function of linguistic utterances depend on the linguistic, socio-cultural and/or historical context in which they are produced. Seminars included in this module cover the research areas of pragmatics, conversation analysis, discourse analysis, language and culture and neighbouring fields. They introduce students to the relevant theoretical concepts and methods for analysing language use in context.
Learning outcomes Students are familiar with central concepts in the area of language use. They are able to apply methods of collecting and analysing data for simple research questions on language use. They are able to identify relevant research literature on language use and to develop research hypotheses based on this background. They are able to discuss and present these aspects in class and subsequently integrate them into their written work.
