Extending Deadlines, Module Cancelations, etc.

At the UZH Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, all deadlines and all exam / presentation dates are binding. The relevant deadlines and dates for the courses of the UZH English Department are available in the UZH course catalog and/or the corresponding course guidelines provided by the instructor.

Please contact your instructor if any of the deadlines or dates in a course are unclear or missing.

Should you be unable to reach the instructor in question, you may also contact englishstudies@es.uzh.ch.

Extending Deadlines (I): Exams, Learning Portfolios, etc.

Deadlines can only be extended in cases of force majeure. Moreover, students must be able to document their case (e.g. in the case of illness, they are required to submit a medical certificate or a confirmation from an accredited psychotherapist). Specifically, students must:

  1. inform the instructor prior to the deadline;
  2. submit the documentation within max. 5 working days after the deadline. Deadlines will not be extended unless these conditions are met.

Note that modules may also have to be canceled if any course assessments cannot be completed and graded prior to the UZH grade deadline (i.e. one cannot extend a deadline indefinitely, even in cases of force majeure).

Extending Deadlines (II): Bachelor and Master Theses

Deadlines can only be extended in cases of force majeure. Moreover, students must be able to document their case (e.g. in the case of illness, they are required to submit a medical certificate or a confirmation from an accredited psychotherapist). Specifically, students must:

  1. inform the instructor prior to the deadline;
  2. submit the documentation within max. 5 working days after the deadline. Deadlines will not be extended unless these conditions are met.

In the case of Bachelor and Master Theses, deadlines can only be extended once:

  • from June 1 to July 1 for submissions at the end of the spring semester;
  • from December 1 to January 1 for submissions at the end of the fall semester.

No further extentions is possible.

If the problem persists, the Bachelor or Master Thesis module must be canceled and re-booked. This also means that one has to write a new thesis on a substantially different topic.

Postponing Dates: Presentations, Exams, etc.

Students must inform their instructor before a presentation or exam if they are unable to attend on the day in question. (For example, if an exam is scheduled for 2 p.m., students must inform their instructor by 2 p.m. on the day of the exam, e.g. by email.) Moreover, as is the case with paper deadlines, students must be able to document their case and submit the documentation within 5 working days.

  • In the case of presentations, the instructor will inform the student of their new presentation date (i.e. students do not have the right to pick a new date, though the instructor may choose to give them more than one option).
  • In the case of exams, students will have the right to take the second exam (Nachprüfung). The second exam date for the course has been communicated in the UZH course catalog and/or the course guidelines. (Note that it is not possible to postpone the second exam date, if a student were once again unable to attend due to force majeure, the module in question would have to be canceled.)

Note that modules may also have to be canceled if any course assessments cannot be completed and graded prior to the UZH grade deadline (i.e. one cannot postpone an exam or presentation date indefinitely, even in cases of force majeure).

Canceling Modules

Once the official cancellation deadline has passed, modules can only be cancelled in cases of force majeure. Students need to be able to document their case, and they need to submit the cancelation request prior to the relevant course assessment(s).

Note that modules may also have to be canceled if any course assessments cannot be completed and graded prior to the UZH grade deadline (i.e. one cannot postpone an assessment indefinitely, even in cases of force majeure).

Chronic Illness and/or Disability

Note that students suffering from a chronic illness and/or disability can apply for their study arrangements to be adapted individually. More information is available at https://www.phil.uzh.ch/en/studium/studentservices/gesuche.html. The compensatory measures approved by the Vice Dean of Studies are binding for all parties involved: the student, the module coordinator, and the instructor.

Once they have received the official form with the approved measures, the student is expected to alert their instructor to the adjustments (i.e. they do not have to explain why they need the adjustments, but they are expected to tell the instructor that they have the right to certain adjustments, as specified on the official form).

Military Service, Pregnancy, or Top-Level Sports

At https://www.phil.uzh.ch/en/studies/studyessentials/requests.html you will also find information on possible adjustments for students who are doing military service, who are pregnant, or who do top-level sports.
