Bachelor Minor in English (60 ECTS): Program Requirements

The following tables provide you with an overview of the modules that are required.

We have also provided some sample timetables, to illustrate some of the various ways in which you can organize your studies.

Modules Intended for Beginners

The three modules from the module group "Introduction to English Literature and Linguistics" should be taken at the very beginning of one's studies.

Introduction to English Literature and Linguistics (30 ECTS)

English Literature: Textual Analysis

9 ECTS

Language Skills and Culture: Introduction

12 ECTS

Note: Students who fail any of these three modules twice can no longer complete the study program.

Modules Intended for Advanced Students

The modules listed below are intended for advanced students (i.e. students who have completed all the modules from the module group "Introduction to English Literature and Linguistics").

English Linguistics (12 ECTS)

Important: Students should have completed "Language Skills and Culture: Introduction" as well as "Introduction to English Linguistics" before taking any of the modules listed below.

History of the English Language 1: Focus on Old English

6 ECTS

History of the English Language 2: Focus on Middle English

6 ECTS

Note: 

  • Students who fail either "History of the English Language 1: Focus on Old English" or "History of the English Language 2: Focus on Middle English" twice can no longer complete the study program (i.e. they will be issued a 'subject ban' or Fachsperre).

English Literature (12 ECTS)

Important: Students should have completed "Language Skills and Culture: Introduction" as well as "English Literature: Textual Analysis" before taking any of the modules listed below.

Literature in Context: History and Theory

6 ECTS

One of the following ten Bachelor Seminars (1 x 6 ECTS):

Note: 

  • Students who fail "Literature in Context: History and Theory" twice can no longer complete the study program (i.e. they will be issued a 'subject ban' or Fachsperre).
  • Students who fail all of the ten Bachelor Seminars in Literature twice (i.e. 10 x 2 fails) have to contact englishstudies@es.uzh.ch.

Language Skills and Culture (6 ECTS)

Important: Students should have completed "Language Skills and Culture: Introduction" before taking any of the modules listed below. 

Writing Skills and Media Analysis

6 ECTS

Note:

  • Students who fail "Writing Skills and Media Analysis" twice receive a 'subject ban' or Fachsperre, i.e. they can no longer complete the study program.

 

Note: Students may also take additional modules, beyond the required modules outlined above (i.e. the information above outlines the minimum requirements).
